What are the Disadvantages of Merino Wool?

Merino Wool Merino wool is taken from Merino sheep which initially come from Spain. Still, today they can be found most commonly found in Australia and are also being raised in some parts of South America, the United States, and New Zealand. Merino wool is the most widely used & famous fabric after cotton and polyester. It is an ultra-soft fabric that is commonly used in socks and performance base layers and is considered as one of the most sought-after materials for outdoor gear. But the real question is it really worth it? Do you feel like spending 70$ on a t-shirt made of merino wool? Well, we are not here to defame the beloved material, but we will surely highlight the disadvantages and shortcomings of this wool so that you are in a better position to decide about your wardrobe. Here is the list of top disadvantages of famous merino wool. It costs more than conventional wool Merino wool cloths or products are much higher in cost than those of conventional wool. He reason is that it takes twice as much material to make a garment of merino wool than it takes for traditional yarns, which surely justifies its high cost. But still, it might be very harsh on your budget. So next time you go out shopping merino, you better be mentally & financially ready for dents.

Not as Soft as They Say

Those people who try to tell you that merino wool is super soft material are probably hired by some brands or they lie. It is because Merino wool is not that; soft. It is undoubtedly not silk or cotton, and that’s why you would not find a merino wool towel in the market. But one will have to acknowledge that merino wool, like regular wools, is not scratchy either.

Durability is a little below standard

Merino wool was once considered the most durable material. Still, thanks to “Warmth technology”, a number of synthetic fibre materials are present in the market today that out-perform merino wool easily. Although the merino tops you bought the previous week ought to last more than a few cold-rinse washes, soon you will be surprised with a popped-up hole as the fibres break overtime.

Little Itchy

If you are an ultra-sensitive skin person, merino wool products are not for you. Though, there is absolutely no doubt that merino wool is a million times softer than that ordinary wool you might still get uncomfortable after wearing it 2-3 times. The wool woven sweater that my grandma made me remains the softest wool I have ever worn.

Dye-ability is not the best

If I say merino wool is Hydrophilic (Latin for water-loving), it would be wrong at all. It is because of the reason that merino is not the best material when it comes to giving up the absorbed water. An experiment result revealed that a shirt made up of 100% merino wool took 0.4 times extra duration than a shirt made up of 100% polyester to dry. These figures show that if a polyester shirt dried in 34 minutes, merino took something less than 48 minutes. That’s a considerably long time.
